Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 31) - Local government units (LGU) are expected to receive the cash assistance for the most financially-hit sectors within a day or two as the country is facing a crisis due to the coronavirus disease pandemic.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Monday that it has already sent instructions to its field offices.

“We have now the instructions to our field offices, considering that we have already distributed the social amelioration cards that will be given to target beneficiaries. In a day or two, we can immediately distribute the cash assistance and this will be provided to the local government units,” DSWD Secretary Rolando Bautista told CNN Philippines.

The social amelioration program is in line with the newly signed law, Republic Act 11469 or the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, which gives President Rodrigo Duterte emergency powers in handling the crisis.

Under this program, LGUs will have to distribute to the cash aid of ₱5,000 to ₱8,000 to the target beneficiaries which include senior citizens, persons with disabilities, homeless, among others.

Bautista said that it is up to the LGUS how they will distribute the financial aid in line with the social distancing protocol.

Following the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon, which will end on April 13, only establishments that provide basic necessities are allowed to operate but only for limited hours.

Mass transportations were also temporarily shut down throughout the quarantine period.
