Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 6) — Of the 4.4 million jobless Filipinos recorded as of September, 1.9 million lost their jobs only temporarily due to the coronavirus pandemic, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said.

In an interview on CNN Philippines’ Newsroom Ngayon today, Bello said these workers who were temporarily terminated should get their jobs back after six months.

“Pag nag resume ang operations ang employers, ma re-rehire din ‘yong ating nawalan ng trabaho,” he assured.

[Translation: When the employers resume their operations, they should be rehired.]

The labor chief said those who lost their jobs six months ago when the pandemic caused businesses to shut down and pause operations should already be rehired by this time.

However, businessmen appealed for a six-month extension so his office is considering the request.

Bello said that DOLE would come up with a decision by Thursday.

Employees who are not reinstated within six months should be given their separation pay as required by law, he stressed.
