Mayor Isko Moreno shuts down sidewalk stalls in Divisoria due to filth
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 11) — Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Monday ordered the closure of sidewalk stalls in Ylaya Street in Divisoria due to improper waste management.
Moreno conducted a surprise inspection on early morning and reproached vendors and police officers for the litter in the area.
"Hindi ba kayo nahihiya dyan o talagang baboy din kayo sa bahay? Kailangan ko pa kayo sorpresahin? Pinaghahanapbuhay ko na nga kayo eh," Domagoso told vendors.
[Translation: Are you not ashamed of being like pigs there, or also in your homes? Do I really need to surprise you? I’m already giving you the opportunity to conduct your businesses.]
The mayor allowed the vendors in the street to sell at night, however, they were asked to vacate the area due to filth.
“Di ba pinapayagan natin sila sa gabi, para magtinda sila? Kung ganyan lang din ang iiwan sa atin araw-araw, itigil na silang lahat,” Domagoso said.
[Translation: We allowed to them to sell at night, right? If they will just leave their trash like that everyday, we should shut them down.]
During the flag-raising ceremony, Domagoso also noted that illegal vendors have again attempted to extort vendors for the upcoming Christmas season.
"Sa mga nanonood na organizer, isoli niyo na yung perang inadvance ninyo sa vendor.” he said.
[Translation: To those organizers who are currently watching, please return the money you got from the vendors.]
"Ang kaya niyong linlangin, mga maliliit na tao. Matiyempuhan ko lang kayo. Iba na. Maniwala kayo sa akin,” said Domagoso.
[Translation: You can only fool low-profile people. Once I catch you, it will be a different story. Trust me.]
Failure to observe cleanliness and orderliness in the city is violation of Ordinance No. 8572 or the “Tapat ko, Linis Ko” Ordinance. Section 4 of Ordinance No. 8572 prohibits citizens from "leaving trash and other refuse in the gutter, sidewalks, streets, alleyway and roads."
