Nationwide transport strike happening today
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — A transport group is staging a nationwide strike on Monday.
The Stop and Go Coalition called on its members to protest the government's plan to phase out passenger jeepneys 15 years old and above in a bid to modernize transport vehicles and make these environmentally-friendly.
The group is opposing the plan because they claim only big companies can afford the vehicle replacement.
They are instead suggesting an upgrade of their jeepneys and to strictly enforce road-worthiness rules.
An MMDA constable told CNN Philippines, the situation on the road was just like an ordinary Monday morning rush hour, where a lot of passengers are waiting as most jeepneys are full.
Transport group Piston said it is joining the transport strike to sympathize with Stop and Go. The group is staging a picket rally in front of the Department of Transportation office along MIA Road in Pasay City Monday morning.
Other transport groups such as Pasang Masda, Fejodap, and ACTO are not joining the strike.
