Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Former child star-turned singer Aiza Seguerra has been named new chair of the National Youth Commission (NYC).

The Office of the Presidential Spokesperson made the announcement on Friday. Seguerra's partner, Liza Diño, was also named as chair of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). Both of them will serve a term of three years.

In an interview with CNN Philippines, Seguerra said she was excited and scared at the same time with the appointment.

She said she would be consulting youth sectors to find out what could be done to help them become empowered.

Seguerra said indigenous peoples were her main advocacy.

"And of course, bilang isang artista (as an artist), kasama na ang [included] arts and culture," she said. "Malaki ang maitutulong nun sa pagbabalik ng nasyonalismo at pagmamahal sa bansa ng ating mga kabataan [This would greatly help in instilling nationalism among the youth].

She also mentioned the problem of drugs, pregnancy and the  rising number of HIV cases among the young.

Seguerra and Diño had been campaign supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte. Diño's father, Martin, is Duterte's party-mate in PDP-Laban.
