Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 20) — A 13-year-old student of Culiat High School in Quezon City died Friday morning after being stabbed by a schoolmate inside their campus.

According to the police report, the 15-year-old suspect stabbed the victim in the chest.

The victim was rushed to New Era General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The suspect is already in police custody.

In a statement, the Department of Education-National Capital Region (DepEd-NCR) said it is both saddened and disturbed by the violence that happened inside the school, "which is supposed to be a safe place."

It added that students who witnessed the stabbing "already underwent psychological first aid."

DepEd-NCR and the Quezon City government will provide the necessary assistance to the victim's family.

Mayor Joy Belmonte also promised a thorough investigation, and said the city's Schools Division Office will "review security protocols in schools and implement additional measures if warranted to avoid a repeat of such incident."
