Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 6)— The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) took the global spotlight once again as its Terminal 2 bagged an award at the 2019 World Architecture Festival (WAF) on Thursday.

The MCIA Terminal 2 won the “Completed Buildings: Transport” category of the prestigious annual awards— besting other global transport stations including Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport and the Hong Kong West Kowloon Station.

The festival judges praised the airport for its simplicity and elegance—as well as for its use of “many locally sourced materials.”

“The internal spaces are light and uncluttered and the design is capable of future extension,” the judges said of the airport, which features the work of multi-awarded architectural firm Integrated Design Associates.

Other nominees for the award include the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the Tainan Bus Station in Taiwan, the Barangaroo Ferry Wharf, Mernda Rail Extension, and Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal in Australia.

The WAF, dubbed as the world’s largest interactive architectural awards program, was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The MCIA and the Iloilo International Airport were recently named by a travel website as some of the best airports in Asia.
