Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 17) — Burger King Philippines on Wednesday announced that the onion shortage in the country has hit its operations.

"Our onions are a bit hard to come by these days due to a shortage in regular supply, affecting our Whopper and other flame-grilled burgers," the hamburger chain posted on Facebook.

In place of fresh sliced onions, Burger King said customers can choose crispy onions, extra lettuce, or extra tomatoes.

Last week, the Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed a lack of white onions in the market. It added that the government is looking to import white onion to address the supply problem.

Senator Imee Marcos, however, was unconvinced.

"The DA was urged to assess white onion shortage, as it was asked on sugar and porcine PAP (processed animal protein) shortages. Again, no data could be presented, just blanket claims that 'Wala po talagang laman ang mga bodegang pinuntahan namin' [The warehouses we inspected were really empty]," she said.

The senator's brother--President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr.--heads the DA.

Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) president Rosendo So urged the government to conduct a proper inventory.
