Magnitude 5.3 quake jolts Itbayat island
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 25) — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the Itbayat Island in Batanes Thursday night, state seismologists said.
The quake struck 50 kilometers north of Itbayat at 9:48 p.m. and had a depth of 10 km, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
Phivolcs added that damage and aftershocks are expected.
Itbayat is the largest island in Batanes and the country's northernmost municipality. It is 156 km from the southernmost part of Taiwan.
